Al Wakrah secures historic Qatar Cup handball title

Al Wakrah Sports Club has achieved a significant milestone by winning their first-ever Qatar Cup handball championship in a thrilling showdown at the Al Duhail Sports Hall on Saturday.

After previous disappointments in the finals of 2019-2020 and 2021-2022, Al Wakrah showcased their dominance by defeating Al Gharafa with a commanding scoreline of 26-21.

The match was fiercely contested from the beginning, with both teams giving their all. Al Wakrah held a slim one-point lead at halftime, with the score standing at a nail-biting 12-11.

However, it was in the second half that Al Wakrah truly displayed their strength, leaving behind their past setbacks and taking control of the game.

Goalkeeper Mohamed Obeidi played a crucial role in Al Wakrah victory, making remarkable saves that denied Al Gharafa several potential goals and ultimately turning the tide in his team favor.

For Al Gharafa, this marked another finals defeat in the Qatar Cup, adding to their previous letdowns in the 2016-2017 and 2018-2019 seasons.

Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, the Second Vice-President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, honored the champions by presenting them with medals during the grand award ceremony.

Yamen Al Qafsi, the coach of Al Wakrah, expressed his immense pride following the resounding victory. He described the win as a tremendous boost for the club and praised the team exceptional performance, highlighting their resilience and relentless approach in both offense and defense. He also expressed gratitude to the squad for their unwavering dedication and effort.
