PSG clinches Ligue 1 title as Messi surpasses Ronaldo goal record

Lionel Messi, whose contract is set to expire next month, delivered a standout performance as Paris St-Germain secured their 11th Ligue 1 title with a draw against Strasbourg.

In the 59th minute, the 35-year-old Argentine scored a record-breaking goal, receiving a pass from Kylian Mbappe and netting his 496th goal, surpassing his rival Cristiano Ronaldo tally of 495 goals.

Although Strasbourg Kevin Gameiro equalized, saving his team from relegation, PSG victory was a relief. Strasbourg put up a strong fight, taking 17 shots, with five on target, against Christophe Galtier side.

As PSG concludes their last match of the month, uncertainties surround the future of the Ligue 1 leaders, with Messi time at Parc des Princes coming to an end this summer.

Having been suspended for two weeks due to unauthorized travel to Saudi Arabia, speculation arises about Messi potential move to Barcelona, Saudi Arabia Al Hilal, or even the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.

The pressure is also mounting on Christophe Galtier, as the French coach faces criticism for PSG elimination from the Champions League and their six losses in the first 17 league games of 2023.

Regarding his future, Galtier expressed, "I believe I deserve a second season at PSG. I have given my all with a lot of energy."

"I was able to steer the team in difficult moments. Personally, I feel that I deserve to continue," he added.

Former Spain coach Luis Enrique and Jose Mourinho have been rumored as potential replacements for Galtier.
