Xavi discusses Messi potential return to Barcelona as PSG contract nears expiration
PSG forward Lionel Messi is expected to make a decision about his future in the next few days as his contract with the Parisian club is set to expire next month.
Barcelona has openly expressed its desire to bring back the Argentine forward, with Coach Xavi being the latest to voice his hopes of seeing Messi return to Camp Nou.
"I told the president that Messi return makes sense. I have no doubts about it. He is perfect for our system and our idea. I already have a tactical plan in mind with Leo," Xavi told Sport.
"It up to Leo. I think he has to decide. I'm speaking with Leo, yes," Xavi added.
Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano has also indicated that Messi is likely to make a decision on his future in the coming days, with a move to Barcelona still being a strong possibility.
Back in February, Xavi had said that the doors would "always be open" for Messi to come "home," amidst rumors of his departure from Paris Saint-Germain.
"Messi knows that Barcelona is his home, and the doors are open. I have said this many times," the former midfielder stated.
However, a potential return to Barcelona depends on the club unstable financial situation, which hasn't significantly improved since Messi shocking departure.
With the departures of Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets from Barcelona this season, there is some financial space that has opened up for Messi.
Nevertheless, La Liga strict regulations may force the 35-year-old legend to explore other options in different leagues, such as the Premier League, the Saudi League, or the American Major League Soccer (MLS).
No official bid has been released by Barcelona due to UEFA Financial Fair Play Regulations. However, Al Hilal reported bid of €500 million per year has remained unchanged since April.
Messi has just one more game left in the season with PSG, as they face Clermont Foot 63 on June 3rd.
