Arwa Al-Banawi: “My Goal Is for Women to Feel Comfortable and Empowered in Every Outfit”
Dubai – For any young designer today, establishing a successful label requires more than just talent—it demands an acute awareness of the modern world and an ability to craft designs that resonate with the diverse needs of today’s consumer. Emerging designers must balance cultural relevance, sustainability, inclusivity, and social responsibility while offering something that speaks to women’s real lives. Since launching her namesake label in 2015, Saudi fashion designer Arwa Al-Banawi has been navigating these complexities with grace and vision. Known for her commitment to timeless elegance and empowering designs, Al-Banawi recently rebranded her label to ARWÁ, a move she believes will enhance its global presence. The label’s rebranding also coincides with the launch of a revamped e-commerce site and a fresh collection of day-to-evening staples designed to remain relevant year after year. “We always knew this was part of the plan,” Al-Banawi explains, referring to the brand’s evolution. “The idea was to create a shorter, more recognizable name, particularly as we grow internationally.” The new collection features a diverse campaign with model Gabriela Rickli-Gerster, a 70-year-old Swiss woman, showcasing the timeless appeal of Al-Banawi’s work. At the heart of Al-Banawi’s creations are some signature features: immaculate tailoring, clean lines that reflect modesty and elegance, and an overarching message of empowerment. She has stayed true to her original vision while refining the brand’s aesthetic to better suit the modern woman. “I want every woman who wears my clothes to feel comfortable, confident, and stylish,” says Al-Banawi. “Whether dressed conservatively or casually, the goal is to ensure they feel good in their own skin.” As a designer from Saudi Arabia, Al-Banawi’s deep understanding of modest fashion and comfort informs every piece she creates, making it universally appealing. Growing up in Jeddah, Al-Banawi’s world was shaped by constant travel, including frequent visits to Europe, particularly Switzerland and Germany. These trips significantly influenced her eclectic approach to design, blending Eastern and Western sensibilities. However, it was her parents’ passion for art and style that ignited her love for fashion. “My parents always had an appreciation for art and design,” she reflects. “My mother had an impressive collection of fashion magazines dating back decades, and I spent my childhood exploring those and learning about the craftsmanship behind iconic designers.” Al-Banawi believes fashion is about more than just appearances—it’s a tool for expressing one’s identity and emotions. Her designs reflect a deep personal connection to her culture and experiences. The collection features a combination of flowy dresses, delicately embellished pieces, and kaftans inspired by her mother’s graceful elegance. At the same time, more structured pieces like tailored blazers and trench coats with Arabic calligraphy nod to her father’s appreciation for sharp tailoring. For Al-Banawi, fashion is not only a creative outlet but also an emotional experience, allowing her to tell her story in a deeply personal and relatable way. “Fashion is a way to express myself,” she says. “It’s about having fun, being creative, and sharing my journey with the world.”
