Morocco’s Moldiag Revolutionizes Medical Supplies with Africa’s First Mpox Tests
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant vulnerabilities in Africa’s healthcare infrastructure, particularly in accessing critical medical supplies like tests and vaccines. Determined to address these gaps, Morocco’s Moldiag has made history by producing Africa’s first mpox testing kits, marking a milestone in the continent’s quest for medical self-reliance. Moldiag initiated the development of mpox tests after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the virus a global health emergency in August. The outbreak has significantly impacted central Africa, with over 59,000 cases and more than 1,100 fatalities this year alone, according to Africa’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Mpox is challenging to diagnose due to its similarity to other illnesses like measles and chickenpox. Accurate testing is critical, yet many regions in Africa lack the necessary lab infrastructure. In Congo, for example, only a few provinces have diagnostic facilities, forcing doctors to rely on visible symptoms. Moldiag’s affordable $5 tests address this shortfall effectively. Founder Abdeladim Moumen emphasized the efficiency of producing and distributing within the continent, noting, “Local production streamlines the process, making tests more accessible to African nations.” The company, operating under Morocco’s Foundation for Advanced Science and Research (MAScIR), has already shipped tests to Burundi, Uganda, Senegal, and Nigeria. This achievement highlights the potential of African-based innovation to tackle public health challenges. By championing local production and reducing dependency on imports, Morocco is not only addressing immediate health crises but also paving the way for a more resilient and self-sufficient Africa.
