Pavillon Afriques at Cannes Celebrates ‘South Africa 30 Years of Freedom’

May 14-23, 2024 Where Africa Welcomes the World

[London, UK, April 23, 2024] The Pavillon Afriques is set to open its doors to the world with a momentous occasion: the European tour launch of "South Africa Celebrates 30 years of Freedom". Organized by Moments Entertainments in collaboration with the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, this event marks a significant milestone in South Africa's history.

"We believe that this project is a timely and important initiative that will showcase the rich and diverse history, culture, and achievements of South Africa and its people over the past three decades since the end of apartheid. We think that this will be a great opportunity to reach a wider and international audience and to promote the positive image and reputation of South Africa as a dynamic and creative nation," said Max Boqwana, CEO of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation.

The opening ceremony will feature the screening of select episodes from a documentary series created by Faith Isiakpere, offering a poignant reflection on South Africa's journey to freedom, featuring testimonials from leaders and eyewitnesses.

Celebrating its 5th year as the premier networking and business development platform for the African film industry at the Cannes Film Festival, Pavillon Afriques has become an integral part of the event since its inception in 2019. Founded by Karine Barclais, Pavillon Afriques serves as the sole pavilion dedicated to Africa and its talents.

"Our objective is to increase representation of filmmakers, talent, and producers who identify with African heritage and to improve the global industry’s access to Africa’s finest filmmakers," says Barclais. "By showcasing and promoting organizations vested in the African film industry, Pavillon Afriques presents a unique insight into the potential for growth and project development across the continent and in the diaspora."

Throughout the festival, Pavillon Afriques will play host to established film professionals, up-and-coming talent, African Ambassadors, Government Officials, Funders, Distributors, and other key figures in the film industry.
