The latest Star Wars TV show, Skeleton Crew, has arrived on Disney+, offering fans a new approach to the galaxy far, far away. Unlike its predecessors, such as The Mandalorian or Andor, which delved into complex adult narratives, Skeleton Crew offers a simpler yet equally captivating adventure — one that centers around a group of young children.
Jude Law, playing the role of Jod Na Nawood, a mysterious figure, sees his character intersect with four adventurous children on their journey through space. In a recent media discussion, Law expressed his enthusiasm for the idea of exploring the Star Wars universe from the perspective of the younger generation. “There’s something beautiful about seeing everything — the threats, the drama, the humor, and the adventure — through the eyes of children,” he said. “It brings a fresh energy to the world of Star Wars, and I think people will find it refreshing.”
The main characters of Skeleton Crew are Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), a young boy who dreams of being a Jedi; Neel (Robert Timothy Smith), his steadfast and loyal best friend; Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), a rebellious girl who feels stifled by her upbringing; and KB (Kyriana Kratter), Fern’s genius friend who can fix just about anything. The series kicks off when Wim uncovers a strange artifact in the forest, which sets the kids off on an unexpected adventure that will take them across the galaxy. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including meeting Law’s character, Jod, who plays a significant role in their journey.
Cabot-Conyers found it easy to connect with Wim, given his own childhood fascination with the Jedi. “Wim is a boy who wants adventure,” he shared. “He’s bored with the ordinary suburban life and dreams of becoming a Jedi, which I think we all can relate to in some way.”
The creative team behind Skeleton Crew, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, had long been developing the concept for the series before it was greenlit by Disney+. “We’ve always been passionate about Star Wars, and we felt we had a story that would fit perfectly within the franchise,” Watts explained. “When we got the chance, we jumped at it.”
Ford added, “We’ve always had this idea of a character like Jod, played by Jude Law, and when we reached out to him, we were surprised to find out that no one had approached him for a Star Wars role before. He was already a huge fan, so it was a perfect fit.”
Law reflected on the impact Star Wars had on his own life, especially after the release of the original 1977 film. “It changed the way films were made,” he said. “It was so innovative and full of creativity, and it left an indelible mark on all of us.”
In addition to Star Wars, Skeleton Crew draws inspiration from the early films of Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment. The creators have often drawn comparisons to films like The Goonies, a classic adventure film from 1985. “We didn’t set out to recreate those films, but we wanted to capture that spirit,” Ford said. “Those movies didn’t shy away from putting kids in real danger and letting them be the heroes. That’s something we wanted to do with this series.”
Kyriana Kratter, who plays KB, echoed this sentiment, saying that Skeleton Crew offers something for everyone. “It’s a great show for a new generation of Star Wars fans, but it also offers plenty of nostalgia for parents. There’s so much fun and adventure, along with little Easter eggs for longtime fans.”
