Qatar Foundation Introduces Thobe as Student Uniform for Pre-University Education

Thobe to Become Qatari Student Uniform in Pre-University Education at Qatar Foundation: Reports

In a recent development, it has been reported that the thobe and ghitra will soon become the official uniform for Qatari students between sixth and 12th grade at Qatar Foundation (QF). This decision, according to local paper Al Raya, is set to take effect in the next educational calendar and will apply to all QF pre-university schools, with the exception of the Qatar Leadership Academy.

The decision has been made with the aim of promoting Qatari culture and fostering a sense of cultural belonging among students. Parents of students attending the pre-university schools have already been informed about this new uniform policy.

Under this policy, non-Qatari students will have the choice to either continue wearing the regular uniform or opt for the traditional attire. It is important to note that this policy will not affect female students.

The thobe, a long, white garment with buttoned sleeves, is commonly worn by men in Qatar and the Gulf region. The ghitra, a long white fabric held in place by a circular black piece called an e'gal, completes the traditional look.

This decision comes after Qatar received widespread recognition for its culture during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted by the country. Throughout the tournament, millions of tourists celebrated Qatar culture by visiting the iconic Souq Waqif, where they had the opportunity to purchase and wear traditional attire while supporting their favorite teams in the stadiums.

Additionally, following Argentina victory at the World Cup, the bisht, a traditional cloak worn by men and symbolizing royalty, gained popularity after Qatar Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani presented it to Lionel Messi.

In another noteworthy development, Qatar Ministry of Culture Department of Heritage and Identity recently announced its bid to include the bisht in the World Heritage Day celebrations in 2024. This initiative aims to preserve and honor the region ancient heritage.

The decision to introduce the thobe and ghitra as the official uniform for Qatari students at Qatar Foundation schools is a testament to the country commitment to promoting its unique culture and heritage. By instilling a sense of cultural belonging, QF seeks to create an inclusive educational environment that celebrates Qatar rich traditions.
