CULTUKAR Design Residency: Fostering Cross-Cultural Connections for Qatari Fashion Designers

Fostering creativity: Designers invited for residency opportunity by Years of Culture & M7

Qatari fashion designers have an exciting opportunity ahead with the announcement of the CULTUKAR design residency program. Organized by Years of Culture and M7, this initiative aims to foster cross-cultural connections and creativity among Qatari and Indonesian designers.

As part of the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture, CULTUKAR invites Qatari fashion designers proficient in embroidery to collaborate with Indonesian designers and traditional craft experts. The focus is on creating bespoke merchandise that showcases a blend of Qatari and Indonesian influences.

The stunning creations resulting from this residency will be presented at prominent industry events later this year, providing a platform for Qatari designers to gain global recognition.

Aisha Ghanem Al Attiya, Qatar Museums' Cultural Diplomacy Director, encourages Qatari designers to seize this opportunity and immerse themselves in Indonesian culture and craft. Participants will have the chance to explore traditional Indonesian crafting techniques and collaborate with local artisans.

To apply for this residency, interested designers need to submit a personal statement and portfolio showcasing their best work through the Years of Culture website by the deadline of 20 May at 5pm Doha time.

Running for three months from May to July, the residency program will include a 10-day in-person workshop in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. Participants will engage in various activities, including group discussions, skill apprenticeships, studio visits, and prototype design and development.

Maha Al Sulaiti, M7's Director, believes that Indonesia's vibrant textile traditions provide an ideal environment for creativity and collaboration. The residency aims to shine a spotlight on Qatar's talented designers in the global fashion arena.

Responsible production and sustainability will also be emphasized during the program, with a focus on using sustainable materials and managing waste effectively.

Two Qatari designers will be selected to participate in the residency, each paired with an Indonesian counterpart. This will facilitate idea exchange, knowledge sharing, and the establishment of enduring collaborative relationships.

The chosen Qatari designers will work alongside Indonesian material designer Hana Surya and textile designer John Martono throughout the residency. They will also benefit from the expertise of mentors and masters in the field.

The CULTUKAR residency seeks to delve into the cultural treasures of Tasikmalaya, particularly its rich craft traditions.

Eligibility criteria for this program include proficiency in fashion design processes, a minimum of two years of professional design experience, and Qatari nationality.
