QatarDebate Launches First International Conference on Debate and Dialogue

QatarDebate Centre Launches First International Conference on Debate and Dialogue

The QatarDebate Centre has announced the launch of its inaugural "International Conference on Debate and Dialogue," which will take place on May 29-30, 2023, at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC).

The conference aims to bring together a diverse network of researchers, academics, and postgraduate students from the global debate community. It serves as a platform for knowledge exchange, cooperation, and the advancement of research in various fields.

With the participation of 80 academics, researchers, and postgraduate students, as well as experts and members of the fellowship program, the conference marks a significant milestone for the institute.

The event will delve into a range of interdisciplinary topics, including philosophy, education, linguistics, and Islamic studies, providing a platform for meaningful discussions and intellectual growth.

Additionally, the conference will showcase QatarDebate fellowship programs, research initiatives, and academic curricula to international universities, emphasizing the value of their offerings.

Mr. Abdulrahman Al-Subaie, Director of Programs at QatarDebate Centre, expressed the significance of this international conference in uniting efforts and bringing together experts from academic institutions worldwide. He highlighted the center achievements over the years and emphasized the importance of strengthening relations with media and academic entities through collaborations and memorandums of understanding.

The conference will feature four distinguished speakers. Dr. Recep Sentry from Hamad Bin Khalifa University will discuss the connection between debating and Islamic heritage, while Dr. Dima Mohammed from Nafa University in Portugal will explore argumentation frameworks and applications. Dr. Heba Rauf Ezzat from Ibn Haldun University in Turkey will focus on dialogue and its cultural and social dimensions, and Dr. Maya Nenadovic from Croatia will present on debate and education.

Alongside the conference, an exhibition will be held, highlighting the center recent achievements, projects, and publications. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences and discuss the impact of debates on their academic and professional lives.

In a collaboration with Doha Debates, workshops for local and international debaters, as well as Elite Academy members, will be organized. These workshops will address pressing issues suggested by students and serve as topics for future panel discussions during the upcoming season of Doha Debates.

The conference will also feature specialized sessions and activities, culminating in the Oasis of Dialogue, which will focus on "Social and Familial Relationships."

Debates in both Arabic and English, resembling the presidential debates model, will take place, with six debaters presenting different opinions on a given issue. The debates will conclude with questions from the audience.

Strategic partners of the QatarDebate Centre include the Doha Forum, while media partners include the Al Jazeera Media Institute and Arab and New Arab TV Network. Hamad Bin Khalifa University Translation and Interpreting Institute serves as the translation partner, and Qatar Airways is the official carrier for the conference.

Qatar national debating team will also participate in the conference, showcasing the center role in training and representing students locally and globally.
