About Dry Grasses Wins Best Actress at Cannes | DFI-funded Film

The film "About Dry Grasses," co-funded by the Doha Film Institute (DFI), received high praise at the Cannes Film Festival. Turkish actress Merve Dizdar, who plays the lead role in the film, won the prestigious 'Best Actress' award on Saturday.

Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, a renowned filmmaker in the festival circuit, "About Dry Grasses" is a recent production that showcases the talent supported by DFI.

DFI expressed their excitement and congratulations to Merve Dizdar and the entire film team on their Best Actress win in an Instagram post. The film tells the story of a former activist who is rebuilding her life after a devastating leg amputation caused by a bombing incident.

Dizdar portrayal of a resilient woman committed to political activism despite personal hardships has impressed both audiences and critics. Set in a remote Anatolian village, the film explores the complex relationships between the protagonist and two cynical village schoolteachers. Through emotional dialogues, it delves into the dynamics of teacher-pupil relations and the origins of political engagement.

In her award-winning role, Dizdar portrayed a character who fights for her life and overcomes numerous challenges. She drew from her personal experiences and understanding of the socio-cultural context in the region to bring depth to her performance.

Merve Dizdar, a 36-year-old actress, has been active in the film and television industry since the early 2010s, following her studies in acting and initial work in theater. Her impressive repertoire includes popular Turkish TV series like "Wounded Love."

Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who previously won the Palme d'Or for "Winter Sleep," adds another achievement to his remarkable career with this acclaimed project. The success of "About Dry Grasses" highlights the significant contribution of DFI in fostering global collaborations in the world of cinema.
