PhD students in Somalia will receive financial assistance through a recent partnership between Qatar Charity (QC) and the University for Peace of the United Nations (UPEACE). This initiative is part of a grant program established by Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, which aims to provide 100 Somali researchers with grants for their PhD studies over the next three years.
The agreement was signed by Abdel Fattah Adam Muallem, director of QC's office in Somalia, and Professor Samuel Kali, UPEACE's regional director for Africa. The signing ceremony was attended by Farah Sheikh Abdul Qadir, the Minister of Education, Culture, and Higher Education for Somalia, Ishaq Mahmoud Mursal, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Qatari Ambassador to Somalia.
Abdul Qadir expressed his gratitude to Qatar Charity, stating that they are the first organization to help fulfill the president's promise by granting scholarships to 40 Somali researchers. Professor Kali emphasized the positive impact of this collaboration, highlighting how it contributes to the investment in Somali intellectuals and supports the country's sustainable development.
Muallem emphasized Qatar Charity's commitment to education in Somalia, as they strive to create a brighter future for future Somali generations. He mentioned that QC has been actively involved in the education sector in Somalia for many years, including building and renovating schools, offering scholarships to Somali students, supporting teacher training programs, and providing educational materials and supplies.
Qatar Charity's Efforts Worldwide
Qatar Charity has been involved in various educational projects worldwide, particularly focused on supporting vulnerable communities. Recently, the organization completed the construction of two advanced classrooms in government-run schools in Punjab and Sindh provinces of Pakistan. They have also opened the Taiba Education City, the largest project of its kind, in Sudan, which provides inclusive services for orphaned children.
In addition, Qatar Charity is building 15 schools in Bangladesh, providing living and learning spaces for nearly 3,500 students. Over the past five years, the organization has constructed 38 educational facilities globally, benefiting approximately 10,000 students.
